We've been Duped: The Creation of the All Consuming Self!

Corporations spend millions of dollars every year paying psychologists to discover new ways to "hook" people on their products and ideologies. In 1955, corporate CEO and retail analyst Victor Lebow stated,

"Our enormously productive economy demands that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfactions, our ego satisfactions, in consumption. The measure of social status, of social acceptance, of prestige, is now to be found in our consumptive patterns ... we need things consumed, burned up, worn out, replaced, and discarded at an ever increasing pace. We need to have people eat, drink, dress, ride, live, with ever more complicated and ... more expensive consumption."

In what is possibly one of the most important stories of our times, Adam Curtis' acclaimed series, Century of Self, examines the rise of the all-consuming self against the backdrop of the Freud dynasty.  While pundits, economists and our national leaders encourage us to consume, consume, consume, we are driving both indigenous cultures and thousands of species to their extinction.  This four part series viewable online through FreeDocumentaries.org  (search: Century of Self) exposes how we became addicts to our consumer society and brings an awareness that can set us free. This fascinating series is a must for educators, therapists, community leaders and those hoping to create a sustainable future.
