These are exciting times and we at U of Earth are convinced that the time has come for us to reinvent ourselves and our society, to learn to live in balance with each other and the planet. But as the above quote indicates, until we create new green jobs that allow us to live fulfilling and meaningful lives there is little hope that the necessary changes can be made. As long as our salaries are being paid by a system that creates and sustains the economic and ecological problems we now face, many of us will refuse to understand that a new economy is in order.
Ingenuity and resolve has always been America's strength. We must now summons that resolve and ingenuity to create sustainable job opportunities for all Americans, to create leading earth saving technologies and restoration practices and once again become world leaders. We owe it to the world. As the world's leading consumer, polluter and cause of the current world economic crisis this work becomes our redemption project.
The current financial debacle has proven to us all that we are not afraid to take extreme risks to secure our future. Although change always appears risky, reinventing our economy should no longer be seen as a risk, it is our simple reality, and to fail to do so is not an option. What we need now are heroes and heroines, a million of them, courageous individuals, companies and organizations that are willing to take chances on a new future by creating green job opportunities and sustainable career paths. As Van Jones, the new administrations green jobs consultant wrote, " ... stalwart heroes will emerge form the ranks of ordinary people just like you and me. So each and every one of us should stop playing small and license ourselves to become one of the giants of the new century. We will need champions by the truckload."
